Fun at the William S. Hart Museum

Saturday, January 19
Open House
This will be a different way to visit the Hart Museum. Bring the questions you’ve always wanted to ask, and challenge our volunteers and staff! Explore the mansion as quickly, or for as long as you want. We will also have a simple craft activity on the back patio for our young guests (and the young-at-heart).

Saturday, February 16
Open House — The Day of the House
Again we will be hosting a day without set tours. We will be offering a more in-depth look at the house Hart built. Find out more about the architect, Arthur R. Kelley, and the Heinsbergen Decorating Company that created the paintings on the beams and doors you see. What are the origins of the design elements typical of a Spanish Colonial Revival style home? You are invited to participate in a family activity where you will learn about blueprints, and how they help guide builders and tradespeople in putting a house together. There will be a craft where you will get to make your own simple blueprint using sun sensitive paper!

Open House
This will be a different way to visit the Hart Museum. Bring the questions you’ve always wanted to ask, and challenge our volunteers and staff! Explore the mansion as quickly, or for as long as you want. We will also have a simple craft activity on the back patio for our young guests (and the young-at-heart).

Day At the Ranch
PETS! Come celebrate our pets, and learn about William S. Hart’s pets. Share what your pets mean to you. Collaborate with others make items that can be donated to local shelters and rescues, such as blankets and toys.

Saturday and Sunday,  April 13 and 14
Open Houses both days — The Day of the Cowboy
The 2019 Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival returns to Hart Park. Admission is free, and our doors will be open during the hours of the festival. We will be talking all things cowboy, with special items on display. Come learn more about elements of the cowboy life, and try your hand at some cowboy crafts!

These events are a different way to visit the Hart Museum. Rather than tours scheduled throughout the day, you are free to explore the museum as it suits your needs. We will have staff and volunteers stationed around the house to answer questions, or talk with you about the Hart. There is always some kind of craft activity for our young guests (and the young-at-heart)!
On a day such as this, where we focus on a special topic, we will be engaging our guests additionally by offering pop up chats, displays, and hands-on activities related to the subject of the day.

Day at the Ranch — Art of the Basket
Join us for a Day at the Ranch event where we will be highlighting William Hart's collection of Native American baskets. Learn about the materials, process, and cultural significance of basketry in California's indigenous communities and try your hand at basket weaving as well.

These events are a different way to visit the Hart Museum. Rather than tours scheduled throughout the day, you are free to explore the museum as it suits your needs. We will have staff and volunteers stationed around the house to answer questions, or talk with you about the Hart. There is always some kind of craft activity for our young guests (and the young-at-heart)!
On a day such as this, where we focus on film (silents, westerns, early talkies), we will be engaging our guests additionally by offering pop up chats, displays, and hands-on activities related to the subject of the day.

These events are a different way to visit the Hart Museum. Rather than tours scheduled throughout the day, you are free to explore the museum as it suits your needs. We will have staff and volunteers stationed around the house to answer questions, or talk with you about the Hart. There is always some kind of craft activity for our young guests (and the young-at-heart)!
On a day such as this, where we focus on our friends, the bison, we will be engaging our guests additionally by offering pop up chats, displays, and hands-on activities related to the subject of the day. Learn the history of the bison in North America. Why do we call them bison rather than buffalo? We’ll look at this creature from a natural history perspective, as well as how he appears in some of the art in the house. And of course, see them in person here in Hart Park!

November

Saturday, November 9
Day at the Ranch — The Mighty Oak
Spend the day celebrating the most important trees in the history of our state. Understand the unique adaptations that oaks have developed to survive as well as discover their importance in our local ecosystems. Most of all, learn about how important acorns have always been for the indigenous communities of California. Participate in the traditional, gathering, sorting, and processing of acorns for foods. Make acorn crafts, discover delicious recipes, and hear the story of the Acorn Maidens and further your appreciation for this amazing gift of nature.

Learn what to look for when viewing a painting. How do many of the paintings in this house tell a story, and what story do you see when you look at them? We will also have several opportunities for you to make art yourself!
